Friday 12.2.11
General Chemistry:
Today we finished up our work learning the math of chemistry (a.k.a. stoichiometry) and took our weekly quiz. We will check those on TUESDAY as I will not be here on Monday. While the sub is here with you on Monday, you will have some bookwork to do with Chapter 10 (Gas Laws) so REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR BOOKS ON MONDAY!!
AP Chemistry:
Today we took our weekly memorize me quiz (which now includes the reaction prediction equations) and graded the homework from Chapter 7. We also discussed yesterday's lab which was a gas law lab (write-up due FRIDAY DECEMBER 9th!) and discussed what to expect for Monday's sub time. As of now, the test over Chapter 7 will be on TUESDAY of next week and we'll dive into bonding (Chapters 9 & 10) starting on WEDNESDAY. We will plan to finish that topic, test on that topic, and review for the final all before December 19th (along with doing/writing up at least one more lab!) The AP students WILL have some chapters to work with over the holiday break... I will send home some 'guide sheets' for them to complete with the chapters which will hopefully assist them.
Monday, November 28, 2011
Monday 11.28.11
General Chemistry: After grading the quiz we took on 11.22.11, we began the study of Stoichiometry (Chapter 9 in the textbook). We will finish this topic by Friday and then move onto Gas Laws. Expect a bit of homework each night this week.
AP Chemistry: After grading the exam over Gas Laws, we began notes on Chapters 7 and 8 in Kotz. This topic will be finished by Friday (another quiz/test/exam!) so we can move on to Bonding next week (Chapters 9 and 10). No rest for the weary!
Friday, November 4, 2011
Friday (again!) 11.4.11
After learning how to name compounds and write correct formulas for compounds this past week, we took a bonding assessment today. Next week, it's on to reactions! BE SURE TO BRING YOUR BOOKS ON MONDAY!!!!
AP Chemistry:
Titrations went very well yesterday in lab, as did using the carbonless data notebooks. :-) Today, we took memorize me quiz #3, graded reaction prediction 3 (#4 is below - due next THURSDAY), discussed the lab data write-ups (the OFFICIAL, TYPED write-up is DUE next THURSDAY), and worked an example from Chapter 5 on titrations. HW = p. 227 # 70, 72, & 76 and p. 1104 # 14, 16, & 18 - DUE MONDAY!! We're also looking at a quiz/test/exam next THURSDAY over the pieces of Chapters 5, 8, and 22 that we've been working with this term.

Friday (thank heavens!) 10.28.11
General Chemistry:
Today we graded the homework on molar mass and percent composition; some people in Block 2 would be warned that they need to have homework READY TO GO when it is due... After the grading was done, we did the weekly quiz over Structures, Ionic vs. Molecular/Covalent Compounds, Molar Masses, and Percent Composition. Next week, we tackle naming compounds and culminate the week with a district assessment on bonding.
AP Chemistry:
Today we took the weekly memorize me quiz, corrected the weekly reaction prediction sheet, graded the homework from yesterday, and discussed the bell-ringer quiz on oxidation numbers to be done on Tuesday of next week when we return. Please also have Chapter 6 (reactions) in the 5 in 5 ready to go - we will discuss the whole chapter on Tuesday. Thursday of next week will be a lab day (just fyi.)
Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Tuesday 10.24.11
Today we reviewed structure drawing and assigned 4 more off of the worksheet to have structures drawn for tomorrow. Block 2 did a quick flame test lab and finished the measurement lab. More bonding tomorrow with putting together binary ionic compounds.
AP Chemistry:
Almost got through all of Chapter 5 in the 5 in 5... bell-ringer quiz tomorrow over Trends and Oxidation Numbers, then we learn how to titrate (LAB DAY). Work day this week will be Thursday when I am writing curriculum at the ASC.
Monday, October 24, 2011
Monday 10.24.11
Today, we reviewed electron dot structures, discussed the difference between ionic and molecular/covalent compounds, and learned how to draw structures for both. HW was assigned (it's titled Binary Ionic and Molecular Compounds and is p. 118 for block 2 and p. 88 for block 3... it's the same page, but we numbered differently in each class!) - classify the compounds and then draw structures for the 6 indicated in class (LiBr, MgO, CI4, Pb3N2, PBr3, and SO2). This is DUE right at the beginning of class so we can go on to the next step. Block 2 - you have LAB tomorrow - bring back signed safety contracts and DRESS APPROPRIATELY!! :-)
AP Chemistry:
Today we discussed about 1/2 of the material in Chapter 5 of the 5 in 5... the rest will be tomorrow along with some prep work for a titration lab (dress appropriately!). Wednesday will be lab day this week and Thursday will be work day... Friday = quiz #2 for memorize me list items and reaction prediction #2 will be due as well. There will most likely be a quiz over Chapter 5 of the 5 in 5 on Friday, too... just to warn you. :-)

Friday (:-D) 10.14.11
General Chemistry:
Welcome to our new class of parents and students!! I hope you find this page informative and invite you to contact me with comments on how I can make it better for all of you. :-)
Thursday we started off the new term. For Block 2, that meant acquainting ourselves with each other and getting materials. Please be aware of what I need you to get done for me by Monday (signatures from parents on a few documents, having parents fill out the parent form, getting the General Info WS done...) so we can be off and running on Monday with a quick review of material from last term and then on into bonding. For Block 3, we discussed electron dot structures and introductory bonding. For Monday, please have p. 85-87 done.
AP Chemistry:
Thursday we did a lot of 'explaining' about what would be happening this term; more explaining into Friday as well as a diagnostic test from the new 5 in 5 books. On Monday, our focus will return to the textbook where we will finish discussing Chapter 5 - Titrations. Please read AND TAKE NOTES over pp. 216-221 and be ready to cover all of this in one day. Tuesday we will discuss Chapter 5 in your new 5 in 5 books so you may want to work ahead and get that ready to go.
Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Tuesday-Wednesday October 11-12, 2011
General Chemistry:
Last week, we concluded our study of the periodic table by emphasizing the trends of the periodic table as well as learning how to write electron configurations (both long and short handed!). A weekly quiz on Friday followed by a review on Monday (yesterday) in preparation for the final. Students made a list of what will be covered on the final exam, which takes place on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2011 at 7:45 am (bright and early!). Part of the final will be the DCSD Assessment over the periodic table - study up!
Advanced Chemistry:
Last week we finished everything we could over Chapter 5 and took a quiz over that material on Friday. Review Monday (yesterday) was over all 5 chapters of material that will appear on the final exam. Some students in Block 2 opted to take the final during Block 4 - I am ok with that. :-) Grades on Infinite Campus should be complete with everything but the final by 3:00 today. The final is going to be worth roughly 75-80 points.
To those students who leave us Term 2, I have enjoyed having you in class. To those staying for the rest of the year in AP Chemistry - here we go!! :-)
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
Wednesday 9.28.11
