General Chemistry:
Today we discussed the quiz from last Friday and then graded ALL of the conversion factors pages (whew!). We also discussed the LABS we will be doing tomorrow - one is a reaction lab, the other is a density lab.
Homework tonight is to finish p. 24-25 if you have not already done so and to read the background and questions that go with the lab for tomorrow (p. 27-32 in your binders).
LAB TOMORROW - COME PROPERLY ATTIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Advanced Chemistry:
We finished talking about Chapter 2 (well, almost in Block 4!) and assigned EOC problems. These include #1, 6, 10, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, 27, 29, 39, 42, (24 & 48 for extra credit) which start on p. 90 in the textbook. These are DUE FRIDAY. We also discussed the writeups for the first 3 labs - these are due NO LATER THAN TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 6th!!
Tomorrow is a work day for Chapter 2 problems and Chapter 1 issues that need help.
Thursday is another lab (Advanced Chemistry Lab #5 - % mineral in chocolate milk)
Friday = EOC's due for Chapter 2 and a CHAPTER 1 AND 2 QUIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be ready!!
The purpose of this site is two-fold: (1) keep parents and students informed of day-to-day activities of the classes I teach and (2) provide additional/advanced/current information about chemistry for your enjoyment.
Have some fun!

Monday 8.29.11
General Chemistry:
Today we (hopefully) solidified the topic of conversion factors with some more examples and a notecard team activity. Workbook pages 24-25 (26 is extra credit) were assigned and due tomorrow.
Tomorrow, after grading pages 13-25 (excluding p. 20-22), I hope to have time to go into LAB... if not, we'll do lab on WEDNESDAY.
Advanced Chemistry:
Today we discussed Chapter 2 information - finishing up tomorrow and also assigning Chapter 2 HW tomorrow. Also had a nice discussion about College... off topic, but none the less important. :)

Thursday 8.25.11
General Chemistry:
We discussed conversion factors a bit more and worked some examples. There was time to work on p. 13-23 (excluding p. 20-22!!) - this is due Friday (tomorrow). We will grade this first thing. We also reviewed significant figures and went over the answers to the 3 problems assigned out of the book on this topic. Finally, we discussed what to expect on the quiz and reminded students to have a calculator.
Tomorrow will include a check for the homework (p. 13-23 excluding p. 20-22), a QUIZ, and a journal.
Please remember to bring in any paper towels, soap, sanitizer, kleenex, and any signatures on the syllabus, safety contract, parent forms, etc. as soon as possible - each of these is worth some points for you!! Don't drop the easy points!! :-)
Advanced Chemistry:
Today was Lab Day. :-) Advanced Chem labs (Appendix H in your binder) 1, 2, and 3.
Tomorrow we will check the Chapter 1 homework, discuss how to use the CRC to look up information (like densities), and have time to finish up any data collecting for the labs. If time we will discuss more about the lab write-ups.
Please remember to bring in paper towels and any signed syllabi, safety contracts, parent forms, etc. as soon as possible they are worth points!!

To Mrs. Trimble's Advanced Chemistry Students, General Chemistry Students, and all the parents:
Welcome to my blogspot!! :-)
This page was established to serve as a resource for you to do several things:
1 - check on daily assignments (handy when absent!) - these will be archived, too, so you can check back as far as you need, as often as you like.
2 - access some websites I have checked out (and like) to help you when chemistry gets difficult.
3 - provide some current science events and articles to ponder should you have time and / or desire.
Feel free to provide feedback by leaving me a comment, dropping me an email at trimblem@davenportschools.org, or talking to me in class / at conferences - I want to make the page work for my students and parents.
Go ahead and feed the fish if you want by clicking on their tank - they can eat non-stop and the tank never gets dirty!!
I am looking forward to being your guide through our explorations into chemistry - here's to a great 2011-2012 School Year!!

SCIENCE READING REPORT (Reporting the Story) - Extra Credit Opportunity
Directions:
Find a chemistry-related or science-related article from the newspaper, internet, or magazine (dated 2009 or newer, please!) OR watch a science program on TV (a news snippet, NOVA, something on the History Channel…)
Report the science facts on your own paper according to the outline below. Remember to cite your source!!
— Source:
Use MLA or APA formatting – see your planners or search online how to do this!
— Title of Article/Program:
— Date of print/airing:
— What happened / what is being researched / what new development is occurring? Why did it happen? (Give me at least 5 sentences minimum here…)
— Who are the main characters?
— When and Where did this happen?
— How did it end / what’s up next?
— Your personal thoughts and opinions on this topic:
